Top 10 Guns for Concealed Carry

Long time readers will no doubt be familiar with HANDGUNS' occasional "Top 10" pools, in which we survey a sampling of knowledgeable authorities to get their favorite handguns for a particular tactical applicaiton.

In this case, the survey was to determine the best guns for concealed carry.  This is a hot topic these days with so many states having liberalized their CCW laws in recent years.  The authorities we polled were given considerable latitude in their choice.  Some insisted that they would only list guns chambering service-worthy cartridges.  Others gave high marks to guns that were unquestionably "mouseguns." (Question: should the plural of "mousegun" be mouseguns or miceguns?)

The "panel of experts" should be familiar-for the most part-to our readers.   The men we queried are (in no particular order) Col.  Rex Applegate; Jim Cirillo; Evan Marshall; Chuck Taylor; Ed Sanow; Duane Thomas; Robert T. Shimek; Jerry Ahern; Dr. Martin Topper; Dr. Ignatius Piazza (director of Front Sight); Pertersen Outdoor Group Editorial Director Kevin Steele; Guns & Ammo Editor Garry James; Jan Libourel; and Dave Arnold.

Each man was told to select his top five choices for concealed carry, although several men picked fewer than five guns.  A first-choice gun received five points in our scoring, second place got four points on down to one point for a fifty-place gun.

For a company that has been making guns in quantity for less than three years, the pistols from Kahr Arms made a strong showing.  One respondent made the Kahr K40 his first choice in a concealment gun.
7. Kahr 11 (3). For a company that has been making guns in quantity for less than three years, Kahr Arms finished quite strong.  On the other hand, maybe it isn't so surprising.  Concealable pistols are Kahr's stock in trade.  Kahr doesn't even make a pistol that isn't very concealable.  These pistols are progressive in design (somewhat akin to the Glock), evidence high-quality workmanship and deliver performance to match.  The one man who made the Kahr his first choice specified the K40; another favored the miniaturized MK9; the third did not specify a particular model.
